On “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie”, Alanis Morissette rejects all conventions. While most artists release an album after their breakthrough that is strongly oriented toward the musical approach that made them famous, the idiosyncratic singer-songwriter remained true to herself and drew inspiration from a trip to India before beginning recording. As much as her previous album, “Jagged Little Pill”, had made her world famous, “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie” confirmed her role as an important voice of her generation—and proved that her blockbuster success was no accident. Released in 1998, the album set a record for the best-selling LP by a female artist in its first week and remains a pop-rock classic to this day.
