Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder, which causes periods of abnormally elevated mood and periods of depression. The elevated mood may be classified as mania or hypomania, depending on its severity and the presence or absence of signs of psychosis. An individual is likely to make quick decisions with little regard for consequences when in manic periods. During depression, negative outlook towards life, crying and poor eye contact with others are common. There is a high risk of suicide and self-harm in people with this disorder. Bipolar disorder may be caused due to genetic, environmental and neurological triggers. Abnormalities in the function or structure of certain brain circuits, and abnormal action and production of neurotransmitters may result in this disorder. Treatment usually follows a course of medications such as antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, and psychotherapy.
