From the quartets without piano, this is one of the finest. The last of the piano-less quartet albums that Gerry Mulligan recorded in the 1950s is one of the best and the interplay between baritonist Gerry Mulligan and trumpetist Art Farmer is some of the best ever recorded. Also featuring in the quartet are bassist Bill Crow, and drummer Dave Bailey. Virtually every selection is memorable, with "What Is There to Say," "Just in Time," "Festive Minor," "My Funny Valentine," and "Utter Chaos" being the high points. Tracks 9-15 are 1959 recordings for a radio broadcast, "The Navy Swings,". These studio tracks present the band live in a Hollywood studio. The set is well recorded with excellent sound quality.
