The Cat
Jimmy Smith
Jimmy Smith's 1964 album “The Cat” thrilled jazz, rhythm and blues and pop fans alike: the legendary Hammond organist had already recorded several film themes with Verve producer Creed Taylor, some of which even made it into the singles charts. “The Cat” also features such soundtrack hits: composer, arranger and bandleader Lalo Schifrin won a Grammy for the title track. The album reached number 12 on the Billboard 200 and the title track reached number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100! Recorded from April 27 to 29, 1964, at Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, “The Cat” is one of the best recordings Jimmy Smith made under the wing of Creed Taylor.
