Billie Holiday
Rivalled only by Ella Fitzgerald among all female Jazz singers, the great 'Lady Day' was born in 1915. Following her difficult early years she was discovered by Jazz critic John Hammond; she recorded one hit with Benny Goodman, then began her classic 1935-38 association with Teddy Wilson and many of the greatest names in Jazz. She also recorded with Count Basie and Artie Shaw. Despite her many problems she remained a unique talent until her death in 1959.
