Pirmasens, situated on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, takes its name from the itinerant preacher Pirminius and was first mentioned in documents in 850. Landgrave Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt, who had a preference for large grenadiers, developed the town into a garrison town, which was then granted city rights in 1763. After the death of the landgrave and the decline of the garrison, the population made a virtue of necessity and switched to shoe production, which is why the people of Pirmasens are still called Schlabbe today.
