Synopsis: The story is about a girl named Marie, who receives a nutcracker in the form of a soldier on Christmas Eve. BiographyErnst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, German writer and composer, who influenced the Romantic movement in German literature. He was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), the son of a lawyer. His third name was originally Wilhelm, but he later adopted Amadeus in honor of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Hoffmann studied law at the University of Königsberg but only practiced it for a short period before turning to painting, music criticism and composition. From 1814 he was in the Prussian Civil Administration in Berlin. Hoffmann is much better known as a writer. His works of fiction, combining the grotesque and the supernatural with powerful psychological realism, are among the most influential of the Romantic movement.
