Dr. Mila Belich finds herself treading through a labyrinth of loneliness, betrayal, and depression even though she is at the top of her profession. As an immigrant to the United States, she feels alienated and is experiencing urban loneliness which drives her to search for something more. A patient mirrors her loneliness and despair causing her to travel unexpectedly to seek what is missing in her life.




As Dr. Belich travels between her native country and the US, symbols and messages appear to help her find her way back to herself. Upon Mila's return, her workplace challenges escalate. Betrayals and competitiveness cause her to fear for her own safety. As she takes action to protect herself, she is strengthened by a force that fulfills her longings.

This romantic suspense novel is based on a fictional medical doctor at the top of her profession. She seems to have it all, yet she feels alone and seeks relief from depression. Dr. Belich treasures her few long-distance friendships and is haunted by grief from the death of her mother. She revives old family recipes, explores romance from the past, and uncovers metaphysical and spiritual signs along the way.

The dramatic story of romance and suspense is a page-turner. An FBI agent confronts the ones who betray friendship and risk hospital security to advance their own agenda. Relationships are strained, and for some, there seems nothing left to do but return to their homeland to find relief from the betrayal and loneliness in a land in which they feel like a foreigner.

About the Author

Dr. Jelena S. Bankovic, Ph. D., is a Professor of English who taught at Oakton College for 20 years. Dr. Bankovic is a Courtesy Member of the Graduate Faculty at the University of Illinois in Chicago and an Adjunct Professor of English at Loyola University Chicago.

In addition to a book of literary criticism, Dr. Bankovic wrote a spiritual memoir, Letters to Dr. Jung. She lives in Chicago.
