During the civil war in Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, helicopters of visiting Forces flew over Freetown and elsewhere. Flying Soldiers develops the vision for a future HelicopterSquadron of the Sierra Leone Army, based across the river in theregion of the International airport at Lungi. Crews are trained tofly the new Crab helicopter, and the reader shares in theiroperational flying and personal lives. The country does not needa full blown air force, but must have the capability to provideinternal Security and an ordered society from the air.
