Pilate is a cursed man, damned to walk the face of the Earth until he meets the Man on the cross again. During a period of unrest Pilate had a choice to make, and he chose to take the easy way out. He would have to answer to Rome if he executed an innocent man, but he also knew that he had to keep the peace with the Jewish high priests, so he hedged his bet and gave the mob a choice. They could take Barabbas, a lifelong hardened criminal, convicted of murder and sentenced to death, or Jesus, a man with whom he found no fault. "Will you spare Barabbas's life and take that of Jesus?" Pilate asked them. He knew the outcome before they yelled, "Barabbas, free Barabbas."By washing his hands, he expressed his contempt of the decision, but it did keep the Jewish community happy, and there wouldn't be an uprising to explain to Rome. One man's life for a little peace and stability seemed like an easy price to pay. By giving the mob what they wanted and not carrying out his duties, Pilate condemned himself to become a nameless, faceless man - outliving the people he loved. His curse didn't remain a secret for long. A cult discovered his existence, vowing to eliminate him and anyone who dared to love him. Pilate tried to hide himself in the remotest corners of the world, but it seemed the cult that he came to know only as the Brotherhood always managed to find him. When they did, it always ended the same, friends and lovers would be executed, and he would be tortured - left for dead. His curse was to wake up and piece himself together and retreat to another desolate place. This time it was different for him. He had found a woman whom he loved like no other. Of course, the Brotherhood found him, and now his love's life and the fate of humanity hung by a thread. If not for the intervention of a mysterious woman, all might have been lost.
