From the Earth to the Moon

From the Earth to the Moon; and, Round the Moon by Jules Verne

From the Earth to the Moon is a science fiction novel written by Jules Verne and published in 1865. It follows members of the Baltimore Gun Club as they attempt to launch a manned expedition to the moon via a giant cannon. Much of the novel is devoted to the logistical challenges of raising money, building the cannon, and managing the mission. Verne's calculations and theories of space travel, while impractical, had some notable similarities to the later realities of manned space flight. Two sequels, Around the Moon and The Purchase of the North Pole, follow the new exploits of the Baltimore Gun Club. From the Earth to the Moon was part of the inspiration behind the first science fiction film, A Journey to the Moon by Georges Méliès and was referenced by Neil Armstrong in a statement made from the Apollo 11 module on his flight back to the earth.
