Contemporary philosophers like Isaiah Berlin have written that "no man has influenced the history of philosophy to a deeper or more disturbing degree", and Jerry Fodor saying that Hume's Treaty is "the founding document of cognitive science" and the "most important English-speaking philosopher". However, the public in Britain at the time did not agree with Hume, reviewing his work in Research on Human Understanding (1748) and Research on the Principles of Morals (1751).
