The collection of French poems is more than an anthology. As such, it contains synopses of the various literary movements and schools of thought over a period of five centuries from the 15th century Renaissance to Apollinaire's Esprit Nouveau of the 20th century. The bulk of the book is devoted to 177 poems of twenty-seven of the more prominent poets of these five centuries. For each poet, the biography is followed by a collection of some of the poet's finest or most representative works illustrated with drawings, paintings, photographs and photocopies of handwritten manuscripts. At the end of the book, there is a dictionary of literary terms and an alphabetical index of the poems. This textbook is suitable for use in upper division university courses and in advanced high school programs.
