A collection of hilarious stories from a small Texas town in the 1920s. In Brown's Drug-Store on the north side of the courthouse square, Cary McKelvey, a boy just out of high school and waiting to attend law school at the University of Texas, views the scene from the vantage point of his job as soda jerk, sales clerk, and amateur practitioner of internal medicine, minor surgery, obstetrics, and career counseling. He lets us in on a lot of what he sees and hears on a daily basis in Kiowa, Texas, a "sleepy town" with much more going on behind the scenes than the casual observer might expect.
