Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) was an American author famous primarily for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels, 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and to the nascent medium of cinema; The 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book would become a landmark of 20th century cinema. Her works anticipated commonplaces a century later such as television, augmented reality, laptops (The Master Key), cordless phones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk and action occupations (Mary Louise in the country), and the ubiquity of clothing advertising (Aces Jane's Nieces at work). Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, in 1856 to a devoted Methodist family. He was of German, Scottish-Irish, and English descent. He was the seventh of nine children by Cynthia Ann (née Stanton) and Benjamin Ward Baum, only five of whom survived into adulthood. "Lyman" was the name of his father's brother, but he always disliked and preferred his middle name "Frank".
