The book provides an intimate view into the life of a young male resident of McHenry County, Illinois as he pondered the entrance of the Nation into the Civil War and as he attempted to find his way in life prior to marriage and eventual education at Rush Medical in Chicago. As young Walter started his quest in life he taught school in the McHenry County, Illinois region and boarded with numerous families. Thus, numerous family surnames are mentioned in these diaries that may be of interest to descendants of those early residents.
