This book is intended to provide a holistic understanding of mental health issues showing how our knowledge and treatment of mental illness has developed, within the industrialised society, and how the current legislative framework looks to support people with mental health problems. We will examine the factors which can influence our mental health and look at the classification of mental illness and disorders which helps professionals and others understand and assist those experiencing problems. Mental illness not only affects the sufferer. Family members and those that are close to a person suffering with mental illness will also be greatly affected. Very often the needs of the family and friends are overlooked. However, family and friends need to be considered, as frequently they are actively involved in the support of the person suffering with mental health problems. Family and friends must ensure that they maintain their own health. This way they will be in a better place to support their loved one and assist with an individual's recovery.
