Publisher Marketing: Moses Finley (1912-1986) was one of the most widely read scholarly historians and journalists of his age, having grown famous with The World of Odysseus; and he exercised a transformative influence on the study of the history of Greek and Roman antiquity. In this centenary volume distinguished ancient historians and Americanists analyse Finley's political and intellectual evolution, and attempt to understand the paradoxes of the young leftist and victim of McCarthyism whose work owes more to Weber than to Marx and of the young Jewish scholar (Moses Finkelstein) who distanced himself from Jewishness. Contributor Bio: Harris, William Born and bred in Scotland, William Harris is a retired journalist who lives in Johannesburg, South Africa with his second wife of more than 40 years. These memoirs were inspired by friends and family urging him to 'write down' the experiences he sometimes recounted about his life as a child living in Scotland and later as a member of the elite 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines. The latter half of the book is devoted to his exciting, often frightening, experiences as a journalist in Kenya, the Belgian Congo, Rhodesia and South Africa.
