Equation Guru: an Intelligent Algebra Tutor for High School Students Senay Kafkas

An intelligent tutoring system called ?Equation Guru? (EG) is presented in this book. EG is designed to help high school students at grade 8 level to learn the concepts of equation solving with one unknown. EG consists of two parts, the ?Tutorial? part and the ?Drill and Practice? part. In the ?Tutorial? part, students are taught how to solve equations with one unknown in an interactive and entertaining learning environment through the use of animated agents. Usage of such agents enables students easily engage to the dialogs and provides an effective learning environment. In the ?Drill and Practice? part, students are allowed to practice their skills in equation solving. In this part, equations are automatically generated and the student?s performance are constantly monitored by EG for adjusting the difficulty level of the equations.
