WOLFGANG MATTHEUER : Inside, Outside and Me
“Creative acts of shaping and articulating are always ‘self-representation’, exposure, laying oneself bare,” Wolfgang Mattheuer noted in his diaries in 1982. This book traces the interplay between artist, private living environment and artistic work in a particularly compelling way, considering Mattheuer’s artworks in the light of his activities in the private as well as the public and political spheres. In this way, we find ourselves unexpectedly close to an artist who remains popular to this day, while also confronting highly topical issues such as self-questioning, the urge for freedom and political conflict.
