English summary: This book extensively analyzes the role the term nephesh (npsh as transliterated from the Hebrew, with various meanings such as breath, life, soul, etc) as it pertains to understanding what a human being is in the Old Testament. With the help from the analytical concept of metonymy and methods from cognitive linguistics, important questions are pursued in this work, is the concept of soul obscured by nephesh or contained within it? Is the synthetic composition of the body (meaning the close connection between a part of the body and its function) really a trait found specifically among Semitic peoples? When a person describes themselves as nephesh, does it meant that they are choosing to describe themselves in association with a part or organ of the body? Is one able to draw conclusions from this mental concept that stands behind this word? Finally, is nephesh an important tool for understand what a human being is to be associated, in anthropological terms, with a specific part of the composite body? German description: In diesem Buch wird die Rolle der nAefAes in den Menschenvorstellungen des AT umfassend untersucht. Mit Hilfe der Analyse konzeptueller Metonymien, einer Methodik aus der Kognitiven Linguistik, wird u.a. folgenden Fragen nachgegangen: Verbirgt sich hinter nAefAes eine Seelenvorstellung? Ist die synthetische Korperauffassung, d. h. das enge Zusammendenken von Korperteil und Funktion, wirklich eine semitische Besonderheit? Was bedeutet es, wenn der Mensch sich als nAefAes bezeichnet, statt ein anderes Korperteil/Organ zur Selbstbezeichnung zu wahlen? Kann man aus dieser Verwendung Ruckschlusse auf das gedankliche Konzept, das hinter der Verwendung des Wortes steht, ziehen? Und schliesslich: Ist nAefAes tatsachlich wie oft angenommen ein anthropologischer Grundbegriff, d.h. wichtiger fur das Menschenbild als andere Korperteile?
