Set in seventeenth-century Lombardy under oppressive Spanish rule, The Betrothed opens a sweeping and timeless masterpiece of historical fiction. Renzo and Lucia, two young peasants from the shores of Lake Como, see their wedding cruelly blocked by the threats of Don Rodrigo, a local tyrannical lord. Forced into flight and heartbreaking separation, the young couple—aided by the courageous Friar Cristoforo—must face injustice, the cowardice of the powerful, and the trials of exile.

In a world torn apart by cruelty and suffering, their enduring faith and unshakeable love stand as a beacon of hope against tyranny.
