In post-war Docklands, abandoned by her husband, a young woman dies leaving a small child. Uncared for, the boy develops a shell and grows into a troubled adult. Meanwhile, his mother's ghost resides, unresolved, in Nunhead Cemetary. A lifetime later, two unrelated incidents unite his contemporary world and her afterlife and they meet. A lifetime of yearning is satisfied as they get to know one another before they part again. He, unburdened by his past and she, able to rest in peace, reunited with the child she left behind.
