Leaves of Grass

A controversial book for its time, Leaves of Grass is a celebration of the human body and spirit in the natural world. This book when first published under went many revisions by Whitman, and expanded each time starting with twelve poems and finally ending with four-hundred! While on the edge of acceptable topics for its time, the reader today may find these poems to be nothing overly fantastic, but the content for the nineteenth-century is something we need to remind ourselves of as the time was coming out of philosophical Romanticism which celebrated the liberal arts over the conservative mindset of the time. This collection is a celebration of the body and mind in a world that is often dark with stark reality.
