Mel Harmon was raised on a farm in the Washington Fields, the only son of Elmer Woodbury and Iva Tanner Harmon. Although he loved growing up on the farm and setting an example for his little sisters, Ilene, Helen, and Joan; early on he set a goal to become a lawyer. He graduated from Dixie Junior College, the University of Utah Law School, and the inaugural National College of District Attorney's in Houston, Texas. He is a retired Trial Lawyer, employed by the Clark County District Attorney's Office for twenty-nine years. During his career, he handled nearly three hundred felony trials, which included 136 murder trials. Through his dedication and expertise during these high-profile cases, he received extensive news coverage and several prestigious awards including the State Bar of Nevada Distinguished Public Lawyer Award and the William J. Raggio outstanding Prosecutor in the State Award. Mel Harmon is a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His church callings include a two year mission to the Gulf States, ward mission leader, Stake High Council member for eight years, Gospel Doctrine instructor, Investigators' Instructor, Primary and priesthood pianist, and a faithful home teacher from the time he was 12 years old. He has been married for 57 years to Jan Larey, and their temple marriage has been blessed with four children-John, Melodie, Robert, and Rachel-and seven grandchildren-Steven, Lofton, Cierra, Amanda, Gary, Jaxyn, and Jrue.
