Chess has been with us almost beyond measured time. Written records of the game come to light from Persia around the mid fourth, or fifth century. To own a chess set was highly un-usual, as each individual piece had to be hand carved. No two were alike, and each chess set differed in several ways. And yes, some would have been very rudimentary in design. Those few who made these chess sets had to understand the game to know what a finished chess piece would look like, and to represent.
