This is a 17,000 word history of America in time of Benjamin Harrison. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, and his time was part of the so-called Gilded Age. Harrison had a fairly smooth ride, but there was plenty of labor unrest, and he almost went to war with Germany over Samoa, and also had a war scare with Chile over a brawl at the True Blue Saloon in Valapariso. These are the basics, told with clarity and a touch of humor. Read about the New Orleans vigilantes who blamed Italians first, and the tragic final battle of the Indian Wars at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Mike does not take the view that Harrison was a fourth-rate president, just because people today barely know who he was.
