Mariah didn't want to visit her mother. Part of the reason was her mother's new house, an allegedly haunted house previously owned by a serial killer. Another reason was her new family: she didn't want (or need) a new father or brother, and resented them for invading her life. The final reason was how different her mother seemed since getting married, almost as if she was a different person entirely.
She didn't want to visit, but she finally did.
