The Romance of Tristan and Iseult
Joseph Bedier
Dating from the 12th century, this tale of a star-crossed romance between a Cornish knight and an Irish princess is rooted in Celtic legend and French poetry. Tristan's heroic exploits win Iseult as a bride for his uncle, King Mark. But during their sea voyage to Mark's kingdom, Tristan and Iseult unknowingly drink a love potion that arouses their passion for each other and raises irresistible challenges to their loyalty and honor. The Romance of Tristan and Iseult has been interpreted in many forms, from opera and paintings to novels and films. This stunning edition, featuring a subtle color treatment by noted German illustrator Robert Engels, brings the tale to life with effects similar to those of modern graphic novels. Recounted by French medievalist Joseph Bédier and expertly translated by Hilaire Belloc, the story blends visual impact with literary quality.
