Two Seattle Police homicide detectives, Jake Daniels and his partner Melanie Jack are assigned the investigation of a gruesome murder, a murder which will explode into a series of like murders including a strange connection to the Catholic church and a sect called Opus Dei. As Jake and Melanie discover evidence that Jake's father-in-law, the formidable Gavin O'Malley is also hip deep in a similar case with a beautiful wife of another victim finding peace and warmth in the arms of the big private investigator. Through the grimy streets of south Seattle, the snow covered mountains of Eastern Washington in the middle of winter and then down in the jungle of Central America, the investigators chase down their quarry.
