Two naive Japanese farm boys join the army hoping to achieve glory in Japans long-running war with China. They are bound by their homelands ancient traditions and pledge two things loyalty to the Emperor, and to always be honorable soldiers. Despite the fact that their military service is prolonged, they keep those promises for twenty-eight years, nine months, and four days.
