Contributor Bio: Shipton, Eric Eric Shipton participated in five Everest expeditions, made the first ascent of Mount Kenya's Nelion Peak, and with H. W. Tilman he reached the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. With Frank Smythe he reached the summit of Kamet (25,447 feet) at the time, the highest summit ever to be reached. He wrote six other mountain travel and exploration books which Mountaineers Books has published in an omnibus edition.
