Brief Description: Reprint of a 1967 edition published in English by Walker and Company. Brief Description: Neglected by his parents, bullied by his peers, left to wander the streets and woods by himself (that is, when he isn't locked in his room or the cellar for punishment), the little redheaded boy known as "Poil de Carotte" ["Carrot Top"] manages to survive the worst that rural France has to offer. Contributor Bio: Renard, Jules (1864-1910). Jules Renard a une enfance malheureuse. Normalien, il arrete ses etudes pour se consacrer a la litterature. Entre 1887 et 1889, il ecrit "Les cloportes", premiere version de "Poil de carotte". Son oeuvre, au style laconique, est tendue vers l'observation cruelle et incisive de la societe et des relations familiales. Contributor Bio: Manheim, Ralph Ralph Manheim (b. New York, 1907) was an American translator of German and French literature. His translating career began with a translation of Mein Kempf in which Manheim set out to reproduce Hitler's idiosyncratic, often grammatically aberrant style. In collaboration with John Willett, Manheim translated the works of Bertolt Brecht. The Pen/Ralph Manheim Medal for translation, inaugurated in his name, is a major lifetime achievement award in the field of translation. He himself won its predecessor, the PEN translation prize, in 1964. Manheim died in Cambridge in 1992. He was 85.
