This follow up to 'Garuda's Travels: Sins and Redemption' is a collection of essays teased and taunted from bashing around old haunts. It may rant and rail, but muses on dirty politics, dirty hygiene, and some simply filthy behaviour. All the while the Dirty Little War wages in the background. After a month crawling on the borders of Southern Thailand, Vanya attempts to understand the dirty little war that over a decade has killed over 6000 people. Two years later, he does a few more border runs into Insurgent territory, testing his mettle. In-between ducking in and out of every immigration check point on the Thai- Malay border, Vanya Vetto does a few detours along the way to get the low down of terrorism. When he's not jumping at his own shadow, he's on top of his game, visiting a Muslim cemetery, drinking at a grungy bar in Batam, annoying staff at an Indian tea house in Johor, or reading a banned Needham book in public in Singapore. A Dirty Little War is in many ways his own battle campaign against himself. This book does not entertain redemption, fair warning. He's well beyond that stage. 'Most of the world doesn't even know that Thailand has been fighting a war with Muslim insurgents along it's southern border for more than thirty years now. The impact on civilians has been brutal almost beyond imagining, but the news coverage (even within Thailand) is almost negligible. The simple truth is almost no one really gives a shit about all the innocents who have died...' Jake Needham, author of A Girl in The Window.
