It was a world before home computers, electronic games and the internet. If a family owned a telephone it was black, and a large radio was the evening entertainment. During warm and sunny days, mothers would ask their bored children to go outside and play. These are the stories of a year in one family's life. Their oldest son, nine year old Gene, spends his summer vacation exploring the woods and streams with his dog, Mugs. Mysteries left behind by the gold miners of the 1840s were hidden there, forgotten and waiting to be discovered. Other than rattlesnakes, bears, leeches, ticks, wasps, poison oak, mine shafts, and polio infested ponds, the woods were a pretty safe place to play. His adventures and other life experiences will awaken a young man.
