Contributor Bio:  De Vere, Aubrey Anglo-Irish poet Aubrey De Vere (1814-1902) studied metaphysics at university, and honed his literary talent by writing poetry in the manner of his friend Wordsworth. Having converted to Catholicism in 1851, this selection from his numerous poems which centre on devotion to the Virgin Mary expresses his enthusiastic and intelligent assent to the Church's understanding of the meaning of her life and role as expressed in the then freshly-promulgated dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Phillip Medhurst (born 1948), a former Anglican priest, converted to Catholicism in 1988. He has since established himself as a religious educator, poet and writer on Christian theology. Jacques Stella (1596 - 1657) was a French painter in the school of Poussin. The illustrations are from drawings by engraved by Francesco Polanzani and published in 1756. Another set was engraved by Venanzio Monaldini and published in 1783. The pictures in this publication are the best preserved from both sets in the Harry Kossuth collection. The appendices consist of English translations of extracts (originals in Latin) from "The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew" recounted by Saint Jerome (340-420) and from the compilation known as the "Golden Legend" ("Legenda Aurea") by the Archbishop of Genoa Jacobus da Voragine (1230-1298).
