While driving to work one morning, Lizzy receives a mysterious call that so frightens her she loses consciousness and plunges from the road and into a steep ravine. Detective Bill Johnson is the first officer to be dispatched to the scene, and he is extremely puzzled by what he sees. No one seems to know what happened, and Lizzy is unreachable, now in a deep coma from the crash. The accident site chills the detective from this small town police force because he is assaulted by memories of his daughter's fatal crash, which was caused by a drunk driver five painful years ago. He vows silently to do all he possibly can to see that the victim is pulled from the terrible wreckage, which is hard to reach because of the terrain, and the mystery surrounding the accident - solved. He owed it to her. A Measure of Courage is about a woman who is a survivor, about a woman who discovers that, with love, all things are possible. However, she also discovers that some feelings masquerade as love and can include obsession. She believed she loved Ben Fields, but her attachment had to do with her self-hatred that resulted from her childhood sexual abuse, but Ben had no such illusions: he merely wanted someone to punish for the unfaithfulness of a previous girlfriend and his father's disloyalty. This one man's obsession becomes Lizzy's nightmare.
