Cavrin Ransom and his best friend, Emily Roz, are only ten years old when they experience an odd encounter out by the caves. Cavrin is convinced they had come in contact with a dragon while Emily is still skeptical. He does all he can to meet the dragon but obstacles keep getting in his way, including his fear of magic. Cavrin blames his mother's death on magic so anything of magic, including dragons, makes him wary.
