Since its inception in 1976, Checkmate, an Air Staff organization at the Pentagon, has become the Air Force's expert on the development of air and space power strategy at the operational level of war. As an organization, Checkmate's development has been shaped by rational, natural, and open organizational impulses. These impulses and Checkmate's history expose two areas of importance: Goldwater-Nichols reform and the Air Force's approach toward training strategists. Furthermore, Checkmate's journey highlights the importance of organization in strategy.
