When The End came, the grieving survivors of the Apocalypse resolutely shut their doors to topside, and turned their attention to surviving in The Underdown, a place of artificial light and rigid rules put in place to ensure that overpopulation would never be a worry. During the absence of human life on the surface, the pervasive radiation caused by The End twisted and mutated animal life into horrible monsters that evolved to know no other predators, hunting each other through the hauntingly twisted and tormented remnants of the once beautiful cities - further, areas that experienced strong emotion at the finish began to manifest those horrors as ghosties, ghoulies, and all manner of creatures that go bump in the night, just waiting for the unwary to spring the trap and be fodder for cannibalistic entities. For centuries, the remnants of humanity huddled in their darkened world Underdown, and each successive generation began to forget the sun, the sky, and the idea of once more emerging from their long exile to stand blinking in the blinding light of their ancient homeland. Turning their attention to the safe expansion of their cavern systems, and recovering from the end of the world, the Dwellers Underdown settled into what they eventually perceived as their forever. After some long time, special abilities began to manifest in the population - and those children touched by Silver were recruited and trained to be the forerunners of returning Topside, tasked after their training and graduation to venture to the surface and take back humanity's birthright once more. Siobhan O'Bannion was the Silver team leader of First, a bearer of specialized, telepathic Gifts made possible by the unique conditions trickling down from the Apocalypse desolated world above - and quite happy to be so. However, an unexpected call of unusual urgency from the Supervisor of the Silver Academy would upend her simple and straightforward existence, and leave her racing against time to find the answers to questions that she had never considered - while darkness gathers around her at every turn.
