Contributors: Author: Yaffa Liebermann, Physical Therapist, Geriatric Clinical Specialist, and Board Certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), CEO of Prime Rehabilitation Services, Inc. Illustrator: Katie Soko Editor: Alison Cohen About the Book: This 74-page clinical book is written in a user-friendly format with colorful, easy-to-follow, illustrated functional exercises. It is intended for therapists to utilize during treatment in the care environment (hospital, outpatient, nursing home, assisted living, and home) in order to demonstrate, practice and teach proper techniques. It then becomes a familiar tool to use upon discharge from the skilled therapy program for both the patient and the caregiver. The explanations and colorful illustrations provide the patient and care givers with visible and achievable goals which they can use as a practice guide. The book relates primarily to a brain attack that affects the strength and sensation of one side of the body, and it focuses on a few basic aspects of body motion: Trunk control ? Stabilization, strength, and flexibility for the body?s core structure, followed by arm and leg movements. Weight shifting- and equal weight bearing on both sides of the body. Correct breathing ? Long exhalation (in flexion) versus short inhalation (in extension). Repetition ? The best way to increase brain plasticity (its ability to change) and restore motion About the Author: Yaffa Liebermann, PT, GCS, CEO of Prime Rehabilitation Services, Inc. has 42 years of clinical experience and she is a certified Neuro-Developmental Therapist (NDT) in adult Hemiplegia. She found her love and passion working with the elderly in the nursing home environment. She?s a Geriatric Clinical Specialist (GCS), board certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). She lectures to therapists, nurses, caregivers, and family members on ways to improve care for patients. Ms. Liebermann hopes to educate people about how patients can breathe better and perform movements in a safe and correct way?so they can prevent future injuries and carry their bodies in a healthy and beautiful way. About the Illustrator: Katie Soko is Ph. D. candidate in the neurotoxicology program at Rutgers/UMDNJ-RWJMS. From a young age she was constantly drawing and redrawing the body and imagining the movement of the muscles and bones under their skin. About the Editor: Alison Cohen is a highly talented and versatile editor of both fiction and nonfiction. Her clients have included Fortune 500 companies as well as independent authors, publishers and publishing services firms.
