You'll never meet a person who doesn't claim integrity as his most valued virtue. Odd, but there are so many righteous in a world overflowing with deceit. Yet the truth is so important to our species-possibly because of its rarity. Sandra, a painter; Jack, a musician; and Colin, a writer, all believe in the importance of being true to oneself, at least when it comes to art. But when success knocks on the door, each is too willing to "sell out." They meet Doc, a former professor of art, at a hot dog stand, where they begin to have regular meetings to discuss the meaning of it all. Doc is a man struggling with both the demons of his past and his quest for unaffected sincerity. But his young friends see him as the quintessential man of truth. All three young people begin to evaluate every decision in life on Doc's apparent philosophy. Still, they make wrong decisions and feel terrible guilt-as Doc is a constant reminder of the compromises they make to get what they want. A Minority of One is a book that explores man's pursuit of the pure and the reality of emotional and societal survival. It examines the clear distinction between denial of the truth and the choice to ignore it.
