This book is a case study from the insight of an educator at a middle school that sees a unique picture of the school and school district based on achievement data, racial inequities and parental advocacy. At times educators would want you to see a colorblind school that treats all kids the same. But what children and families of color are not benefitting from is this 'same' approach, instead of an equity platform that engages each child on the basis of what's best for each different scenario. By identifying how policy development, lack of cultural competency and school climate impact the achievement gap in school settings, this case study pinpoints areas where the school staff and administration missed opportunities to build relationships with students and families of color to create a welcoming environment for all. The reader will question whether or not the achievement gap is tied to an ethical, opportunity and cultural gap.
