Wavey Tones is a new label presented to you by the rave makers and London party people of the same name. Having brought some of the finest underground acts to the capital, the label is seemingly hell bent on the same thing and as such offers up a new EP from electronic music legend DMX Krew aka Edward Upton aka about 20 other aliases including 101 Force, Asylum Seekers, House of Breaks and many more. Across 4 tracks DMX explores plenty of heavily wired analogue soundscapes that are part house, part funk, part electro and part techno. Opener “Mustard Parasol” is all about emotive synthesizer lines and skittish drum patterns that sound like a distant relative to Legowelt. “Decaying World” is not as dark as it sounds, with 80s poppy melodies darting about over bobbling basslines and brightly coloured lines squirming from left to right, inviting you to dance and reflect at the same time. “Flat Rate” again pairs bright and light melodies with heavier, more intense bottom ends with electrifying results. Loose, freeform sounding and wholly analogue, traces of everything from Drexciya to Todd Terje hide within the arpeggiated lines. Closing out what is a thoroughly timeless EP, “Three Days of Entropy” is all coiled up and vibrant in its beats and bass yet soundscape-y, smeared and relaxing in its watercolour synth backgrounds. Accomplished, enjoyable stuff from start to finish, and a solid affirmation of the deep connection between classic Electro and the current Disco hybrid sound
