Thomas Feriero, aka Avatism, brings his “Thought Patterns” to Souvenir this fall season. And just as autumn is; the EP inspires a feeling that only the cool moist nostalgic night time air of autumn can bring. Meet “The Slug"; a rather melancholic mix of dusty dub chords, crisp claps and foggy, degraded vocals. Right from the start we’re treated to subtle percussion, before the kick hits and fuzzy chords come forward. The bass begs us to move with it’s thick itchy presence. The mysterious voice drops; and the hairs on your neck stand. The atmosphere of this track is perfect for those rainy morning commutes; but just as well at home in a sentimental peak on a sweaty dancefloor. “Thought Patterns” begins innocent enough; a faint chords in the distance, a shaker here and there; then the bass hits. Leads slowly rise, atmosphere builds around the penetrant beat, piano’s sound off, perceived chaos. The vocals fade it, a haunting chant sets up the break; and then; back to the beat with the lead in order and chords on cue. Patterns emerge. Thought is accepted. It’s a track that is chilled just right for every occasion; but dreamy enough for any post midnight club soundtrack. The B side brings us the “Clockwork (C/W) Remix” of “The Slug", a version which pushes out an extra dose of Dub. A version who’s tendency to bring out the dance in people is deceptively simple. The bass rumbles beneath us; rolling like thunder through our body. The chords echo into the still night, calling the damp vocals to swallow our thoughts. Be prepared to hear this track, or not, as this will definitely go underground. The Second track on the backside is “Part Of Me", an airy track with natural piano and streetside ambience. Relaxed and smooth, until the ominous bass comes in. Deep, dark and melodic.
