Since its release in 1956, this recording of Bartók's “Concerto For Orchestra” has been considered the benchmark against which all other recordings must be measured. Reiner's masterful control of his orchestra and of Bartók's rhythms and textures, as well as his intense and precise performance, remain unsurpassed to this day, even by dozens of subsequent conductors. Part of the dedication to Bartók's work is certainly due to Reiner's friendship with the Hungarian composer. In addition, the music for string instruments, percussion and celesta demonstrates what an incredible ensemble the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was under Reiner's baton.
