The change in music and content from its predecessor "Benefit" (1970) to "Aqualung" (1971) is considered one of the most impressive in rock history and brought Jethro Tull their breakthrough as a radio and touring band.

The religion-critical concept album impresses with strong compositions and lyrical lyrics, and also contains a greater proportion of acoustic elements than its predecessors. Bassist Jeffrey Hammond makes his band debut here, while Clive Bunker sits on the Tull drums for the last time.
