Formed in São Paulo in 1991 under the guidance of guitarist Rafael Bittencourt and vocalist André Matos, Angra quickly secured a singular place in the heavy metal landscape by defying standard genre norms and blending the intricate structures of European power metal with the vibrant pulse of Brazilian percussion, enriched by orchestral and classical textures. While their debut album, Angels Cry, had already introduced this innovative approach, it was the 1996 release of Holy Land that became their true artistic breakthrough and is frequently cited as the band's defining masterpiece.
