In AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN, Gere plays a young man who's determined to prove his abusive, alcoholic father wrong by becoming a jet pilot in the navy. He remains steadfast in his goal, despite his sergeant making life unbearable for him and a romantic entanglement with a local girl.
In DAYS OF HEAVEN, Bill and Abby are a couple from Chicago who wind up living on the land of a wealthy but terminally ill farmer. Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer so that they can inherit his fortune. However, the farmer's condition does not deteriorate as the couple had hoped, and things turn ugly when he learns of their diabolical plan.
