Before there were kings in ancient Israel, the land was intermittently ruled by a varied collection of judges. No King in Israel is a collection of 36 poems in two parts inspired by the biblical stories of these judges. The first part deals with a range of characters from the obscure Othniel to the (in)famous Samson, while the second narrows its focus to the last and greatest of the judges, Samuel. Both sets of poems mix dramatic dialogues, sharp analysis, and personal perspectives-some serious, some tinged with humor.
